FTP Cheat Sheet for Beginners

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it might be the most important feature of your web hosting account. Why? It is the most used way that you will upload and download files on your web hosting account.

So how do you get started? First thing you will need to do is collect some basic details about your account.

  • Hostname
  • Username
  • Password
  • Port

If you are using cPanel, you can very easily see your FTP settings from within the control panel. Just check under "Files" in cPanel and then click on FTP Accounts. In the Special FTP Accounts section, you will see an icon of a little person, click the "Configure FTP Client" link to the right, and you will see your settings displayed.

There are tons of programs you can use to connect via FTP too. You have programs like Cute FTP, CyberDuck, WS_FTP, SmartFTP and my personal favorite – FileZilla. Many programs can also take advantage of knowing your FTP details. Some of these problems include: DreamWeaver, iWeb, Notepad ++ and Expressions Web.

Need a new FTP account? You can often easily create unlimited FTP account from within your hosting control panel (usually cPanel) too.
So that covers all the basics for your cheat sheet on what FTP is and how you can use it. Now take this knowledge and create an amazing website, blog, forum or ecommerce website.
